Sridevi makes a dazzling return

A simple, modest and yet a powerful depiction is all what Sridevi encompasses in her comeback to Bollywood after a long break. The 90’s superstar plays a common Indian housewife whose life revolves around her family. Her talent is in the kitchen which she takes up as a small business. Gauri Shinde’s directorial debut hits all the right notes with this simple story with a motivating message. Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) is just a housewife until she visits New York at her sister’s place all alone to help her with her elder daughter’s wedding. Travelling to New York is a big challenge for Shashi who doesn’t know English at all. It becomes a problem for her when she visits a café near her niece’s college. She is tensed and intimidated by the woman behind the counter. Her broken English has always been a subject of jokes by her daughter and her husband. The café scene is an intense scene where she runs away from the café, scared and helpless until she notes the number of English Speaking Classes at the local language centre. She sneaks out from her sister’s place to attend these classes which are few stations apart. The whole process of her signing up for these classes to navigating the city to reach the place is a portrayal of her conviction to learn and improve her English. There are people of different nationalities with different stories and reasons to learn English. This small bunch of people along with their instructor David Fischer (Cory Hibbs) spends over 4 weeks learning the basics of the language. One of Shashi’s classmates, Laurent (Mehdi Nebbou) who is a French chef develops a crush on Shashi and expresses it to her. Shashi rejects his feelings but thanks him for helping her to develop self-confidence and for teaching her to respect herself. The final day of their class clashes with the wedding so Shashi is not able to take the exam. However she invites all of them to the wedding where she delivers a toast to the married couple in English. Her improved grasp on the language comes as a shock to her family especially her husband (Adil Hussain) who is now ashamed of making fun of her initially. David considers this speech as a test and declares that she has passed the exam. It’s a heart-warming story of conviction which is empowering and motivating. Shinde in one of the interviews says that the movie is a tribute to her mother who couldn’t speak English either. The movie carries a positive message and also addresses a very important problem in the Indian society: judging a person’s capabilities based on their English speaking abilities. It’s a movie that the entire family can watch together and it released in Tamil and Telugu as well.

I am a huge fan of Sri Devi and after a decade, through her comeback film ‘English Vinglish’ she justifies so well why, she is called the “Chandni of the nation”. The acting skill of Sri Devi engrossed every viewer to see the present scenario how the teenage or a child ill-treats their mother. The story always gives a strong message to the Zen generation that a particular language cannot define and describe you whether you are fit for the society or not, and perhaps the only reason why I love the movie.

It is indeed a tragedy of sorts that in our own Bharat, in order to make an impression or gain acceptance in a group one must be able to converse in English irrespective of one's intrinsic qualities.This film tackles this theme in a very effective manner through the trials and tribulations of Sridevi's character.She plays the perfect Indian housewife and mother to teenagers but does not get total acceptance due to her inability to speak English. Her embarrassment increases at the parent teacher meeting and a number of Indian parents will identify themselves with this scene. After her award winning double role as mother/ daughter in " Lamhe " some years back, Sridevi again exhibits her talent in this film. I still remember that one critic who was bowled over by her acting in Lamhe said that you need to see this film a second time only to watch her acting. It would be fair to call this as a marvellous comeback of Sridevi. That she carries the entire film on her shoulders is an understatement .She gives a stellar performance as the simple housewife driven to desperation after being sidelined and ridiculed by her own family. I particularly like the scene in which (while in the queue) she has to order coffee / sandwich at the diner's and is near tears at her confusion.This scene is well shot and edited. Her resistance to the well meaning advances of her French colleague and her dilemma due to her middle class sensibilities are brought out well. Credit must be given to the director Gauri Shinde for making a completely entertaining film with a strong message.The film does not drag at all and keeps the audience absorbed.
