    Boredom ki Baarish

In 2005 Sarah Bertand traveled the world with a super 8 camera asking directors how does it feel to be a director and made a docu short called There is no Direction. One of the directors was Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Bhansali on an average takes about 3 years to make a film and this is his 6th film. So by now everyone knows what kind of cinema he creates. He left our world of movies after making Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and since Devdas has been living & creating a world of his own.

Guzaarish though set in Goa is still a world which is not todays and the people who inhabit this world do not look like they belong to this day and age. By now if you walk into a Bhansali film you should be expecting that. The story is about a magician who after an accident (the Prestige angle very ridiculously used) is bed ridden for 14 years. He files a petition in the court for Euthanasia. The premise starts off on this note but by the time the film is over we realize that this was a love story between Ethan (Hrithik Roshan) & Sophiya (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan)and not a film about Euthanasia.

I wonder why it took 14 years for both of them to declare their love towards each other. Strange is the world of Bhansali. The film is filled with some bad supporting cast from Suhel Seth (watch him in the crying scenes), an over the top Rajat Kapur and to top it all Makrand Deshpande as Aishwarya's husband. Almost everyone acts melodramatically and speak as if they are in a play. It is only Hrithik as Ethan who saves the day and delivers a fantastic performance in spite of a badly written character he had to live with. There are some unintentionally funny sequences like the courtroom being set up in Ethans house and a Sooraj Barjatya type hum saath saath hai hug in the end. Watch out for Aditya Roy Kapur who shows great potential. Also Priyanka Bose (dancing on the stage in Udi) who I think is a talent to watch out for. I say this purely based on her performance in L.S.D.

In the end all you get to watch is some fascinating Cinematography (Sudeep Chaterjee - his best work yet), some good production design (Acropolis), great music (saibaa is the pick of the lot but is not used in the film) and some good cinema. But what you don't get is a good story. What you get is a bore of a film which is just good to look at.

Final Few Words: Its my Guzaarish to Mr. Bhansali to please get back to the world when he made Khamoshi . It still rates as his best. But till then go watch this art show called Guzaarish.

P.S. I have not seen The Sea Inside & The Diving Bell & The Butterfly which many claim is where Guzaarish comes from.
