Verdict - You may not like the movie, even if you liked the book.

Half GirlfriendWatch trailerRelease date : May 19, 2017

Half girlfriend, isn’t even worth half your time. Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name, this movie doesn’t live up to the hype that was created before its release.  Halfway through the movie, you’ll get irritated by fake “Bihari” accent Arjun Kapoor is trying to pull off.

The movie is about Madhav Jha, a Bihari boy who has come all the way from “Village Area” to Delhi to study in St. Stephens. He instantly falls for Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor), a rich hot chick basket ball player. She comes from the house where there are chandeliers in the bedroom and staircase right in the middle of the house, pretty much how bollywood defines rich and fancy.

Riya is a daughter of an elite couple of the city, she is rich but lonely.  Finds her escape from messy family problems with music. All she has seen in her life is an abusive relationship between her parents and therefore, resists committing to someone.

Madhav who has become an obsessive lover, can’t accept the fact that Riya doesn’t want to be anything more than his “Half Girlfriend” (And this they will remind you about 100 times in the entire movie). Throughout the film, Madhav is either chasing Riya, getting scolded by his friend Shailesh (Vikrant Massey) or whining in self-pity.

Riya and Madhav keep meeting and separating, and meeting and separating, and meeting and separating until you stop counting, and bothering. Finally Riya leaves a letter for Madhav that she is dying and won’t meet him again.

Madhav get’s an internship with Bill Gates. Yes there is Bill Gates in the movie, except his face seems like a floating head stuck on a random body (thanks to poor editing skills). You don’t know whether to cry or laugh at him.

Madhav moves to the U.S and lives with his college buddy Shailesh, who has changed his accent as soon as he moved to U.S. (As fake as Arjun Kapoor’s Bihari one) But here in U.S also, Madhav doesn’t stop he keeps looking for Riya in random bars and café’s because Riya once told him she wants to sing in a New York Bar. He becomes an alcoholic and keeps running from one bar to another (literally),  and asking waiters if they’ve seen an Indian girl singing.

There are many things that will make you wonder, like why on earth does it rain whenever Madhav cries, or how can someone make India Gate’s rooftop a hangout point albeit the security and the tourists around it.

Well, I still wonder why I watched it. There is only music that will help you survive this disaster. Like every other Mohit Suri film, the music is on point.
Speaking of performances, the only performances worth mentioning is of Vikrant Massey, he did quite justice to his role unlike the leading couple.

Therefore, you may not enjoy the movie, even if you enjoyed the book.
