Verdict - a great vacation watch for kids and adults alike

Hawaa HawaaiWatch trailerRelease date : May 09, 2014

Hawa Hawaii is the story of a chai stall boy who dreams of becoming a skating champion. He is helped in his quest by his 4 friends- a garage mechanic, a rag picker, a gajra seller and a zardozi worker. The 4 boys help him to fashion inline skates, they get the skating coach on their side and then the story goes through twists and turns before reaching its exciting end.

The story is pretty straightforward in its narration. The urchin boys tug at your heartstrings with their earnestness, sincerity and the simple love they shower on their friend as they go about fashioning a fantastic looking pair of skates from old metal parts they find in the junkyard. The coach has his own personal journey of transformation to undertake that happens through these boys.

The problem with Amol Gupte's movies for me is that they teeter precariously on the maudlin side. Your eyes are always watery throughout the movie and I don't know if that is a good thing. The kids are poor and scraggy but they are spunky and not prone to self pity. Instead of celebrating their spunk he sometimes patronises them, by showing us their poverty and accompanying it with mournful songs. I think peppier music would have helped the mood stay upbeat in what is after all a positive movie.

The acting is first grade from the entire cast. Amol Gupte's son Partho had already won our hearts in Stanley ka Dabba and here as the boy with a tragic background and a sordid present but with firm roots does a fine job. I am a Saquib Salim fan anyway and as the skating coach he is perfect inspite of the fact that even he has watery eyes mostof the time.

This is a greart vacation watch for kids of all ages. The story is easy to follow by even 5 year olds as my nephew Neel testified and my daughter Keya who is 8, sobbed her eyes out. The movie has morals about hard work and perseverance but it also teaches kids about friendship and dreaming big. A worthwile watch.
