Directed by Siddhartha Malhotra and written jointly by Anckur Chaudhry & Siddhartha Malhotra (story & screenplay), this unconventional movie stars Rani Mukherjee, Neeraj Kabi, & Sachin, alongside other actors. The movie was released in 2018 and was a comeback film for the beloved actress of 2000’s hit movies like Veer Zara, Hum Tum, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Saathiya, Mardaani, etc.- Mrs. Rani Mukherjee. Interestingly, the film released two days after the 40th birthday of Rani Mukherjee on 23 March 2018. Now, as we saw on the trailers, Rani Mukherjee suffers from the Tourette syndrome and the film revolves around the story of how the protagonist turns her biggest weakness into her most defining strength. The movie was filmed at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, India, and was made a shoestring budget of $2,000,000 (estimated) and to everyone’s surprise, it went on to become an unexpected hit all across the globe as it collected $330, 279 despite its limited release at the Global & Indian Box-Office. Further, the movie has been appreciated by each section of the audience despite its unconventional subject and an out-of-the-box theme.But, the reason behind the unprecedented success is the captivating storyline as Naina Mathur (Rani Mukherjee) has a penchant for teaching since her childhood days, but her medical issue acts as a strong barrier in front of her dreams and thus due to this unique disability, she faces several rejections and humiliations at the interviews for this job profile despite being a good, skillful, and knowledgeable teacher. Further, she faces a lot of opposition from her father as he suggests several jobs to her, but she still stands her ground and fights against all odds to secure a job one of the elite schools in the city. But, problems don’t end as she gets assigned a class full of defiant and impish students who have pose several behavioral problems in front of her and constantly create trouble. But, as the story unfolds, it is shown in the movie that how Naina overcomes the challenges and the system as she is armed with a lot of creative and innovative techniques for making the children realize their true potential.With unfathomable determination, she beats all odds to carve out a respectable position in her school by excelling in her endeavor that possesses humungous challenges for a first time inexperienced teacher. Now, the film clicks with audience on several levels as it beautifully showcases the struggles faced by the middle class women of India who are suffering from any disease or syndrome. But, the screenplay, acting, and story are so damn inspiring that is an extremely motivational journey for the viewers. The film also provides an essence to women empowerment as the women can relate to the prejudices and sacrifices that they need to make in order to make it big in any field.But, most importantly, the movie sheds light on the fact that if you have will power and determination to excel, then you can overcome any disability or challenge in your way. Now, the if story is backbone of the movie, then Rani Mukherjee is the soul of the movie as she gives a honest and unadulterated performance, that brings the character to life. Using her hard =earned experience and impeccable acting skills, she beautifully imbibes the “hichkis” and mannerisms of the character and presents the role on the silver screen that the audience empathizes with her rare syndrome, and simultaneously laughs and cries with her. Her performance is highly spontaneous and she makes the character believable and does not let the character go overboard or caricaturist.All in all, Hichki is a gem of a movie and it proves the fact that difficulties and disabilities cannot hinder your progress if you are putting in continuous effort over a long period of time. So, it’s a positive sign that audiences are gladly accepting these meaningful, realistic, and dramatic movies as it indicates the evolution of audiences and surely our cinema is evolving as it is on the way to become world class in terms of quality. So, lets hope that we get to see these riveting stories of ordinary people on the celluloid as being ordinary is special!!!
