Verdict - A beautiful film thats let down only by the weak story

Kai Po CheWatch trailerRelease date : February 22, 2013

If there ever was an example of a movie being better than the book it is based on, Kai Po Che is the perfect one. Based on Chetan Bhagat's novel, director Abhishek Kapoor's film is heartwarming and poignant let down only by the weak story it is based on.

Ishaan, Omi and Govind are three friends from childhood, who dream of starting a sports academy in gujrat. Set in 2000, the film traverses their life and how their friendship grows, colored by their personal lives as well as events happening in Gujrat like the Earthquake, Godhra train burning and subsequent riots.

The film works brilliantly as a story of three friends and their life. There are some amazing moments of bonding that are sure to bring a lump in your throat- the one where the three protagonists climb the top of a bus enroute to celebrate their earning, or the one where two sparring friends patch up to celebrate India's cricket victory. Director Abhishek deftly brings out the nuances of relationships, making them real and rooted, in contrast to the elitist canvas of Rock On.

What fails the film though is that the events happening in the backdrop get trivialized as none of them actually make as much impact as they really have made in reality. The riots, the earthquake, all become mere happenings, making one wonder why the story even touched upon them, for there is no life altering change in the protagonists narrative owing to these, save for the climax that definitely packs a punch with no thanks to the writer but due to some excellent story telling by the director.

Chetan Bhagat has never been a good story teller, he is an immensely lucky one though, for Kai Po Che makes a stellar film out of his mediocre book. The film is enhanced by some brilliant performances by not just the three lead ones, but even the ensemble side actors. Sushant Singh and Rajkumar impress with the ease they slip into thier roles, and Amrita Puri makes you wonder why she is not seen more often on screen.

With a sweeping enourming score by Amit Trivedi and good production values, Kai Po Che is this years first good film. Do not miss this at any cost.
