Verdict - A fast paced movie with an unusual story

Ladies v/s Ricky BahlWatch trailerRelease date : December 09, 2011

Ok, first Ranveer. He is like a fizzy champagne waiting to bubble out of the bottle. Even while standing still he exudes an energy which is so palpable it carries you away. A perfect choice to play a conman. I hate to mix my metaphors but watching him in a 9am movie is like getting a strong shot coffee to wake you up.

Enough already. Now for the story. Ricky Bahl is a conman who tricks gullible women into parting with large amounts of money and disappearing. Three women who have been duped by him gang up to con him in return by setting up a target. They choose a super successful sales girl to pose as a rich heiress from the US wanting to set up a restaurant business in Goa. The plan is to get him to invest in the business and recover their money. The story is interesting and I am not going to spoil your fun by revealing the nitty gritties. Suffice to say, it will keep you engrossed and guessing till very much the end.

The movie is fast paced with no saggy bits. However, I feel the way the ending is arrived at is a bit of a let down. It's as if the director after cooking up a perfect dish does not know quite how to add the final garnish. It has a slightly contrived feel which was a let down. But overall the story unfolds very well and is so different from the usual formulas we are use to, that you enjoy it.

The gang of three-Diapannita Sharma as the power executive who gets sold a dud painting, Aditi Sharma as the simple Muslim widowed girl whose father in law hopes to find her a match and loses money to the con guy and the absolutely adorable Parineeti Chopra (Priyanka Chopra's niece) as the spoilt rich girl who gets conned by the gym trainer boyfriend share a fantastic chemistry. Dipannita shows she is not just a clothes horse but can act as well. Aditi Sharma whom we saw in Mausam is a bit subdued. It is Parineeti who steals the show with her girl next door looks and her down to earth character. She also gets the best lines in the movie. That leaves Anoushka. For one, she is looking too thin and frail. She needs to do something about that. Secondly, she reprises her character from Band Baaja Baraat as the spunky ambitious girl who falls in love and gets confused. Maybe she needs a different look or a different kind of role to bring out the talent I believe is in her. The chemistry beaten Anoushka and Ranveer is still spot on though and makes you sigh wistfully about real love.

The music is strictly ok though I thought the Goa nightclub number was wonderfully done. I was about to start cringing when I thought they would start singing some corny song and there would be some stupid synchronised dancing but relaxed when I realised its just some good instrumental stuff. The choreography in all these movies is getting tired and unimaginative. I think we need some new vision very badly as far as the dances in our movies go. All the new movies have the same steps as if all of them are part of a gigantic dancing school which makes the students do the same steps to interchangeable songs. Boring.

Final words? Go for this movie. Its short, fast, the story is different, the women are spunky and watching Ranveer is like exercising with the Morning Walker machine. Gives you the high without the actual work. Enjoy.
