Verdict - A technically impressive Disney adventure bogged down by overfamiliarity

    MoanaWatch trailerRelease date : December 02, 2016

The biggest strength of Disney's Moana, featuring a protagonist instructed never to breach certain boundaries, is its animation. The level of detail here, be it the water where most of the action takes place or the strands of hair belonging to the protagonist, is stunning - so much so that during many scenes, it almost feels like the cartoon characters are standing opposite real water in the background.

But this is also one relentlessly cliched film, with dialogues about following one's heart and breaking one's shackles that just feel too familiar to make an impact.

There are instances where the film shows certain self-awareness, Disney winking at its own tropes, but for most part the film feels quite inert. It's a fairly harmless film, far from a snoozefest, and it does dazzle every now and then with a spectacularly choreographed set pieces, but it's hard to shake off the feeling that one has seen this narrative play out in a similar fashion several times before.
