After being delayed for six years, Mohalla Assi seemed like a movie with tremendous potential especially in contemporary era. But unfortunately, the inside was hollow as it didn’t live up to our expectations.
The movie is based on the novel ‘Assi ka Kashi’ by Kashinath Singh. It is about the local priest of Varanasi who finds himself amidst the changing structure of his holy city, Varanasi. He strongly detests the growing globalization and commercialization and finds it unable to cope with changing scenario. He is against the idea of selling exotic India to foreign tourists and wants to preserve the rich identity of the place and the language that he teaches, Sanskrit. But his life takes a drastic turn and he has to make a choice to either remain stuck to the old times or go ahead with the changing scenario.
Commercialization, Globalization, saffronization, and communalism – The film promised to be a very significant take on these issues which are extremely pertinent in today’s actual scenario. To me, appeared like much- needed film from the outside as it provides a social commentary on the contemporary socially relevant issues. But sadly, the film despite its strong foothold of concept and inspiration didn’t deliver and left us thoroughly disappointed. It provided no actual reality or solution.
The editing of the film made the matter worse and the filmmakers should’ve tried sticking to the novel which is a masterpiece in itself.
Sunny Deol as the priest looked totally out of place and unconvincing in his character. He neither got the accent right, nor the body language. Sakshi Tanwar, though as his wife was quite good and delivered better than Deol himself.
Overall, the film is just sheen and glossy on the outside but delivers nothing extraordinary on the inside.
Filmmakers didn’t deliver on their part and made a film quite uneven which was figuratively, running all over the place.

    Don't enter this dysfunctional mohalla!

Sunny Deol would have preferred that this movie remains in the cans. This movie was publicised in the trailer as a movie centered around Ramjanma...read more
