Dhoni is a film that traces the cricketer's career and his personal life in a very simple, down to earth manner much like the man Dhoni is shown to be. I am not much of a cricket fan but have always admired Dhoni as much for his cricketing prowess as for his good looks and this movie gave me a great insight into the person behind the cricketer.

The movie begins literally with his birth (don't ask me why that was needed. It's not like he was batting with a surgical instrument the moment he was born) and ends with the high of the 2011 World Cup. What we see is his rise from a small town boy who breaks out of his father's simple dream for him, of getting a regular government job and aspiring for far greater things. What I learnt is that belief and confidence in one's own talent can take you anywhere. That it is not enough to just have talent, it has to be supported by hard work and training. That you can't achieve anything without a team behind you- in Dhoni's case, his first coach who spotted him, his mother and sister who took his side and his friends all throughout his journey. I learnt that you need the support and faith of those around you to help you achieve your dreams.

Dhoni's personality slowly gets built as the movie progresses. It is a good composite of all his good points- determination, hard work, humility etc but no negative sides of his personality emerge (Apart from his commitment phobia). Since Dhoni has backed this movie, it probably was his decision to show only his good parts. The movie glossed over any problems he had with his fellow players. The movie mentions two instances of conflicts -once when he drops team members and second his conflict with Sehwag but both these are glossed over and we see no ugly scenes. Also, his poor showings in some matches don't get highlighted at all. This is a rather lopsided portrayal of a person with a career that had a few setbacks. But like I said Dhoni himself has vetted the script and who wants to show anything negative about themselves?

Sushant Singh Rajput has worked hard for this role and his portrayal is fantastic. He seems to have got the nuances and quirks of Dhoni's character right, apart from the cricket body language. The two ladies in Dhoni's life, his girlfriend who passes away, played by Disha Patani and Kiara Advani as his wife Sakshi are both sweet and charming. The movie is a team effort by the entire cast and since I can't mention everyone here, suffice to say it wouldn't have worked without them. It was nice to see Bhumika Chawla on screen after a long time.

The movie is very long at 3 hours and though the first half passes pretty quickly with lots of cricket the second half is slowed down by a romantic song that could have been avoided. There are lots of endearing characters throughout the film and it is peppered with enough lighthearted moments to keep you entertained in spite of the length.

Dhoni is a great watch for the entire family. I don't know much about Dhoni or cricket so for me it was an education of sorts. Maybe cricket buffs will have some issues with it (all cricket fans are hugely opinionated anyway).

We all need to believe that dreams can come true with hard work and confidence. This movie does that for you. Buy a big tub of popcorn and enjoy.
