Verdict - The flat, dull, overlong film takes all the easiest routes possible.

    M.S. Dhoni - The Untold StoryWatch trailerRelease date : September 30, 2016

Since this project had the blessings of Dhoni himself, and since this is a rare "based on a true story" Bollywood film that uses real names instead of, say, changing KM Nanavati to Rustom Pawri, it should come as no surprise that Neeraj Pandey's MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a hagiography of one of Indian cricket's most successful and not the least controversial captains. But even for that, this is such a boringly "safe" film that even when an adolescent Dhoni requests one of his seniors for a chance to bat during a practice session, he only hits a six after six and nothing else. There is absolutely no insight into the man whatsoever. On at least two occasions during the film, Dhoni's closest friends who have been with him since before he became a star wish him luck by saying "Don't score anything but a hundred!" How does Dhoni deal with the pressure? We get no idea. Why does Dhoni feel comfortable only around women who don't recognize him despite being famous? We get no answer. How about what went through the guy's mind when he was so unexpectedly handed over captaincy despite the presence of much more experienced players in the team? Nope. How about the historic World Cup win in 2011? We get one cursory scene whose only purpose seems to be to absolve the man of some of his controversies (such as the conflict with Sehwag.) Interestingly, the film seems a lot more focused on Dhoni's personal life instead of running us through the highlights of what we have already seen. But even there, this is a tremendously flat, clichéd film that makes an intriguing story seem ordinary. This is a film absolutely devoid of any sensible structure - one moment it races us through three noteworthy tournaments in a single montage, another moment it wastes what seems like forever on pointless romantic songs. One gets the feeling that the filmmakers spent a couple of hours with Dhoni with a questionnaire consisting of ten questions and cobbled together the screenplay based on whatever they could learn. The only moments which work are the gleefully cheesy ones - one involving the news "Mahi maar raha hai" circulating throughout the town and bringing everything else to hault. Another is a cute moment on an airplane involving Sachin Tendulkar's autograph. For a film over three hours long, it's a shame that there's hardly any moments worth remembering.
