Neerja, based on the real life account of a brave flight attendant Neerja Bhanot and directed by Ram Madhvani, will automatically make you salute this hero with tear- brimmed eyes.
The story goes back to the year 1986 when a young and courageous flight attendant Neerja Bhanot gives away her life to save 359 on-board passengers on a Pam am flight hijacked by Libyan- backed Abu Nidal Organisation. The film highlights the bravery of Neerja Bhanot who fought the hijackers in her own smart way and didn’t think twice before laying down her life to save the passengers.
“Zindagi lambi nahi, badi honi chahiye”, Neerja constantly reiterates this dialogue from her favorite film, Anand. Little did she knew, that he life would echo the very thought. Backed by wonderful storytelling and powerful performances from the cast, Neerja hits all the right chords.
This isn’t a typical biopic with the lead character pedestalized and exaggeratedly eulogized. It revolves around the life of an everyday woman who isn’t ordinary in her thoughts and actions. Her courage doesn’t wait to be depicted when she sacrifices her life. It is in the small rebellions of everyday life such as escaping from an abusive marriage or leaving her stable modeling career to become a flight attendant. All this help build an impressive character of Neerja in the minds of viewers.
The film does a masterful job in evoking emotions. The powerful depiction of the courage is bound to move the audience to tears. There’s also a sharp focus on the mundane. The relationship between Neerja and her mother who lovingly calls her “Laado” is heart wrenching.
This is undoubtedly Sonam’s best performance so far in her career. She brought out the emotions and valor with utmost sincerity and honesty. Supporting cast too added to make this film a masterpiece in itself. Shabana Azmi as Neerja’s mother was spot on with her performance.
The film, just like its story has some powerful and moving songs. The composers have done exceedingly well to accentuate the spirit on which the premise of this film is set.
The film is a must- watch to not only being made aware of a life of a hero who is not often talked about but also for the deft storytelling and applause- worthy performances of the cast.
