    Movie: October
    Director: Shoojit Sirkar
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Gitanjali Rao, Banita Sandhu, Sahil Vedoliyaa

Shoojit Sircar’s movie, October effortlessly manages to convey volumes through the silences that are starkly contrasting to movies of this genre.

The film diverges from the roadmap love stories generally followed by removing the heavy exchanges of dialogue, the arsenal of romantic songs which conveniently fit scenes which may or may not need the light that is shone on them, and pretentious episodes of grandeur. The movie provides the viewers a peek into the life of Dan (Varun Dhawan), who is central to the movie. It also shines a light on the Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) and her family, which has many episodes and encounters with Dan.

Dan is a 21-year-old with calm temperament who works as an employee in a five-star hotel. He despises the array of tasks that he’s given, intensely disliking how everyone, from the guests to his seniors, offers him a piece of their minds. The crux of the story begins when Shiuli, one of his colleagues, slips from the terrace and meets an unfortunate accident while looking for him. When Dan learns of this, owing to his inquisitive nature he decides to pay her a visit. Shiuli is hospitalized where she is in a state of comatose. This becomes an everyday occurrence during which he makes small talk with Shiuli’s mother several times. His obsessive curiosity develops into unspoken feelings that are felt throughout the undertones of the movie. The exquisite soundscape of the movie, which has been arranged by Shantanu Moitra and the audiography team, sustains the emotional chord throughout, never letting the scenes become dull.

The movie beautifully expresses the interactions of the natural microcosms of life – love, ceaseless faith and hope. Shiuli’s mother (played by Geetanjali) released the persona of a pained yet resolute soul. Despite the gargantuan odds shrouding her daughter’s life, she keeps her calm in a way that never seems synthetic.

The climax, though moving as the metaphor in her name, Shiuli, resounds through and through, is predictable. The cast was quite exquisite at their respective roles. I would like to rate this movie a four out of five.
