Verdict - Pappu is a tiring watch. Long drawn and boring at times.

Pappu Can't Dance SaalaWatch trailerRelease date : December 16, 2011

Early on, there is a line in the film Jo banta hai wahi chalta hai, jo chalta hai wahi banta hai It perfectly sums up the state of the Hindi film industry in which most of the people are trying to make products out of movies. There are some like Saurabh Shukla who are struggling to find a rhythm in their story telling that connects with the audience. This is his 5th film as a director and for me his 1st. there is heart but theres something amiss.

Whats it about? Two small town India meets Big city Mumbai in this film. Vidya ( Vinay Pathak) from Benaras & Mahek ( Neha Dhupia) from Satara start of as neighbors then flat mates. He cant dance but can do everything else. She can dance, works as a background dancer in music videos and aims to be the lead one day. The film is a peep into their lives.

    Does it work? No

Why? Yet again Vinay Pathak plays a similar kind of role which we have seen before. His choice of roles comes across as wannabe Amol Palekar. There is no charm in his performance which at times irritates. He has had seven releases this year and from whatever I have seen of him he has never raised the bar for himself as an actor. Jhonny Gaddar and Manorama are two films where he was in element. Neha Dhupia is one of the under rated lead actor of our times. She has been performing well in her movies (except the forgettable Gandhi to Hitler) but hasnt got that one movie yet which will make her shine in the limelight ( No. Julie was not that film). She doesnt disappoint with this one too. I really liked her in two scenes when she reacts silently and still manage to communicate humiliation and pain respectively. Saurabh Shukla has captured interesting moments and thoughts in his writing but fails to engage as a director. The film takes too long to come to the point and gets message heavy towards the end. Naseeruddin Shah in his third cameo this year looks out of place just like he looked in Deool. Would be interested to know who got the tiles connect in the film. For me it meant Pappu cant dance to the tunes of the city.

Final few words: Pappu is a tiring watch. Long drawn and boring at times.
