Verdict - Definitely worth watching if you're in the mood for something different

Parched is the 2nd movie to be released in recent times that focuses on women's issues. While Pink was more about Urban India, Parched directs its attention towards the struggles faced by the women of rural Rajasthan. It gives a good insight into the sexual repression that these women have to deal with. One truly feels for the protagonists in this movie, and that is as much a testament to the stellar acting by the leading ladies.

Lajo and Rani are two friends who work together as craftistas. Both of them have been handed the short straw in life with regards to their marriages. While Rani is a widow, Lajo gets physically assaulted by her husband on accusations of being barren. They strike up an unlikely friendship with Biji, a dancer and an escort. The trio share their resentments with each other and start opening each other's eyes to the injustices that each have to face for no good reason.

Parched makes excellent use of its desert setting with its cinematography. One definitely gets the impression of a harsher environment, both physically and socially. There are many uncomfortable scenes that deserve to be watched because they force some harsh truths about our country into the eye of the viewer. Good performances by Radhika Apte, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Surveen Chawla truly raises the plight of their characters. Parched is definitely worth a watch if you're in the mood for something different.
