The movie starts with an alien, nude Aamir Khan who has no religion barriers and convictions. He sets on a journey of finding his stolen totem that would get him back to his actual planet. This scenario is very similar to the context of Hindu dharma, where any kid is born nude and comes to this planet and finds a way to reach BACK. “BACK”, I don’t know where or what this back is. This could be heaven, hell or some other Meta physical location or could be just another planet. So, we all are in need of that totem that would unite us to the ONE that made us (this is what Bhagavad Gita taught me, and I may be wrong too). Even I am in search of this totem.
When a kid comes to this earth, all he has is questions regarding everything. Parents wilfully or hesitatingly answers almost all the questions in the way that they have understood them. A Muslim would teach how to do namaaz, a Christian would ask him to get baptised, or a Hindu would ask him to perform saastanga namaskaram. These belief systems originated long back and for the sake of wellbeing of human kind. But, now the systems have emerged in such a way that they feel threat from the other beliefs systems. In the name of god, there is lots of violence going in this world.
Aamir in the movie tries out each and every religion on the earth. He performs abhishekam, he gets baptized, and he even gets the gross beatings. In search of god, he understands one thing that god is not answering his call. May be god is asleep, may be god is missing, may be god has forgot about the creation he made. He comes to a conclusion that god is missing and asks everyone on the earth whether they have seen him. Did you? Have anyone seen god? I don’t know. But, still we love him, pray and perform lots of rituals in his name. God is a belief and no one has a right to ask him to stop believing god.
Many are comparing it that this has brought only Hinduism into the lime light. There are many religions in India and every religion has to be scrutinised. Is this really a logic to fight? If police arrests a thief, does the thief ask the police to arrest his fellow thief and only then he would be convicted. Didn’t this movie brought the brutal killings of cows into the context? Didn’t this movie brought the religion conversion that is rampant now? Didn’t this movie list out the hypocritical nature of every religion? This movie didn’t make fun of god, but it made us see what really is. Does god need protection? Does a religion need to be saved? I don’t think so. I am rephrasing the words of PK here, if he is the one who created us, then doesn’t he know how to protect himself. Who are we to protect the creator or god?
Performing a ritual is one’s wish. No one can ask to give the milk to the needy, rather performing abhishekam on the idol. It’s personal. No one needs a suggestion as everyone know everything. All the movie asks is not to believe anything blindly. I would like to quote Buddha here, “Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.” The whole movie is based on this quote. Many of us just need some logic and common sense. The sense which we had today may differ with us what we had yesterday. So, nothing is constant. Ask for it and try to understand it just for now.
“Jo darr gaya who mandir gaya”, I don’t think there is anything to get offended by this statement. Humans are basically paranoid in nature and that’s the reason for the humans to sustain its species amidst lots of chaos in the world. When you fear for your life, you plead for help from police. If this is beyond police, you go for god. This may not happen always, but it does a lots of times. When PK loses his remote, he is encouraged even by police to pray for god to get it back, even though it is a desperate measure. Then he chooses to pray each and every god. There is nothing to be ashamed of in seeking god while you are lost. “Bhagavan ladne keliye tumhe taakath detha hain”, is what I have been hearing since my childhood. Please don’t get offended by PK’s statement and understand the truth behind it. I didn’t mean to say that everyone who is dreaded would approach god, as there are many who seek god for peace, for showing the gratitude, and lots of other things. Don’t get embarrassed when someone shows that you are vulnerable, just try to understand your vulnerability and overcome it.
Is Pk really biased? I don’t think so.
