Verdict - A good storyline gone awry thanks to scatterbrained direction

    RangrezzRelease date : March 22, 2013

Rangrezz has the germ of a good story and when it takes an unexpected twist in the second half it actually gets interesting for around ten minutes. The rest is just a good story frittered away by some haphazard almost amateurish direction.

Three friends decide to help a fourth friend to elope with his girlfriend since the parents (rabid UP despot types) are opposed to the marriage. In the process, one loses a leg, one loses his hearing and Jackyy being the hero gets only stitches on his eyelid. (But to show his pain is real they show the loose flesh being stitched up, which looks a bit vulgar but never mind about that). The story then goes into various random twists and the one interesting one before winding down tamely to showing Jackyy with bouncy boobs dancing to Gangnam style (that he spent a bomb acquiring.)

There is a huge South Indian 80s touch that is bugging. A silly romantic song with the heroine wearing some hideous grey satin, a house with a huge aangan (in Mumbai!) and saris worn very Telegu style. Makes it look like a bad remake (which it is).

Jackyy's sidekicks are quite good, the heroine is a total waste and so we come to Jackyy. I had this dialogue running in my head through the movie saying "his dad is paying for this" but he is not terrible. He has a sincerity about him which I like. But that's that. He doesn't have much of a presence inspite of a good body and the way he does stealth he would put Tom and Jerry to shame.. All tip toe and stagily looking around. The pink lipstick doesn't help either. I think he should try character roles. He may do better.

What I loved is the way Santosh Sivan has captured Mumbai in the monsoon. I could almost love my city the way he has made it look. And there is a gorgeous Banyan tree in another scene that took my breath away. (When the story can't hold you, one starts looking around, at the scenery, extras etc).

Rangrezz is a promise gone a bit awry. I would not say it was terrible but there were too many 'roll my eyes around in disbelief' moments for me to honestly recommend it. Skip it.Review
