Irudhi Suttru is the kind of film that Tamil audiences rarely get to watch on screen. Sports drama are not often get made in Tamil and with a woman filmmaker at the helm, the project has received a new dimension to the overall outcome. The film narrates a genuinely moving story of how an impulsive, innocent fisherwoman becomes the world boxing champion under the tutelege of a cantankerous coach, played brilliantly by Madhavan.

The first half has a lovely melange of interesting scenes with beautiful visuals from cinematographer Sivakumar Vijayan who has captured the atmosphere flawlessly. Ritika Singh makes sure she delivers a noteworthy debut performance with impressive body language and commendable lip-sycn, which is something even the established actresses fail to master in Tamil cinema. Kudos to the dedication and commitment with which she has played this endearing role.

The second half goes a little off track with the eulogisation of Ritika's character taking the centerstage more often than it should not have been. Maddy, as usual, loves taking the backseat and delivers a subtle performance with the portrayal of failed coach Prabhu. Technically, the film is topnotch with a fantastic background score from Santhosh Narayanan who ups the ante in the climax and interval sequences with his re-recording.

Irudhi Suttru is one of the rare gems to have come out in Tamil cinema. Though the story is predictable as in all sports films, the treatment and making make this film a recommended watch for film lovers.
