Verdict - A hackneyed, uninspired underdog story.

Saala Khadoos (Irudhi Suttru)Watch trailerRelease date : January 29, 2016

"Saala Khadoos", directed by Sudha Kongara, packs in just about every cliche of the underdog sports movie genre to build a film that is more tired than riveting. Made simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, the film features a buffed up and heavily bearded R. Madhavan playing a particularly stern coach, but, like every other character in the film, he's sketched in such broad strokes that he never rises above the archetype to become a flesh-and-blood character and seems like a poor imitation of Shah Rukh Khan's Kabir Khan from "Chak De India", clearly a prototype for this role. Effective sports films always rise above their tag of a mere sports film: "Chak De India" was about a Muslim guy whose loyalty to his nation is unfairly questioned. The recent Rocky reboot, "Creed" infused fresh air of racial progressivism into a franchise previously accused of racist undertones. "Saala Khadoos" doesn't have any such hook - it's content merely retelling a tale only through its highlights without bothering to focus on the smaller moments, which is what really pumps life into the proceedings. It also doesn't help that this is a very loud film, almost as if the entire film is set on a crescendo. But there's little substance to give the film's dramatic portions real substantial weight. As a result, it mostly feels like a dull, reprocessed version of a film we've seen several times before.
