Verdict - If you love cinema of emotions and hope. Do not miss Sanju.

Rajkumar Hirani has delivered probably the best biopic made in Bollywood. At least in the last two decades. Bollywood did make some attempts like MS Dhoni and Azhar but this one is just million miles ahead of those stories. Hirani has delivered a story of emotions which will make you cry, I had to fight back some tears myself when I noticed people besides me were crying with no guilt I let go in scene where Paresh Rawal is dead.
Problem about writing your observations of such brilliant cinema is that it is difficult to try where to start. So let me take the safer route the movie opens with a typical sweet nothing kind of a writer presents a first cut of a biography to the character of Dutt, what starts as a comic scene quickly turns into a moment of grimness with a court decision hitting Dutt.
From there on the movie moves at a break neck speed hurling one screen moment after the other at you. The brilliance of Sanju is in its screenplay which makes you go through Sanjay Dutt’s pains, achievements and mistakes with an in your face honesty.
What the trailer showed you was just the tip of the iceberg.
There is not one character of importance which appears wasted. A small role as that of Ruby played by Sonam Kapoor delivers epic signing off dialogue.
The father son bonding of the movie delivered by Ranbir Kapoor and Paresh Rawal drive the movie forward.
There are numerous screen moments which help move the story forward and create so much impact on you . A son keeping the torun speech papers in his dead father’s pocket – a speech that he could not deliver to an alive father. A lover who leaves Dutt but takes blame on herself so that the man does not lose his esteem. The Gujarati friend who keeps through with Dutt through his darkest phases.
Sanju delivers such brilliant life lessons without being preachy, the way Paresh Rawal introduces his son to his gurus in life. The way Sanju tries to crack the third song his father left for him. The moments just keep coming.
Hirani has also delivered a simple lesson . Serious cinema can be entertaining. Serious cinema can be well written. Serious cinema does not necessary need be dragging and boring in the name of Intelligence.
Hirani has kept each and every aspect of Sanju well polished. The character actors have been given great lines. Kamlesh Bhai the dedicated Gujarati friend is of course the show stopper. So is Paresh Rawal as Dutt Senior. Sajayji shinde as Bandu dada and even that newspaper editor who changes colours – there is not a character however small who does not have a space of impact in this one.
To me Sanju will remain memorable for the fact that it makes you reflect on your errors, it makes you reflect on the fact that how judgemental we can become without knowing the other side of the story. The potshots in this movie are as much on the media as much are they probably on us judgmental ones. Sanju is also memorable because it says if you hang in there you will win the day.

Sanju will make you laugh, smile, cry and in the end you just would not want to get up and come home.
This is probably Rajkumar Hirani’s most epic real life cinema effort. May be the intellectual dud makers of Bollywood can go and sit in the Ashram of Baba Hirani for a few days.
Five full stars – wish I could give more. !
