One of the most hyped and awaited films of the year, Sanju is a biopic on the life of famous Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and is an insight into the unique & riveting journey that he has gone through since the commencement of the shooting of his first film Rocky. When, the preternaturally talented Ranbir Kapoor is playing the central protagonist and the film is being directed by Rajkumar Hirani, you are bound to have expectations. Now, thankfully, the film does not disappoint as the director of celebrated cult films such as PK, 3 Idiots, & the Munnabhai Series takes the mantle of showcasing the life and story of Sanjay Dutt, utilizes every trick in the book to make menace & drama caused by Sanjay Dutt appear entertaining to the audiences. The film shows his journey into the world of drugs, alcohol, his battle with these addictions, the untimely death of his mother Nargis, the womanizer aspect of his personality, his complex relationship with his father, and most importantly the movie sheds light on his controversial involvement in the 1993 bomb blasts and his time spent in jail. Now, many would call this movie as an attempt to whitewash the “bad boy” image of Sanjay Dutt, but the crisp direction of Hirani and a career defining performance by Ranbir Kapoor after Rockstar are bound to just blow away your mind and the audience is sure to form an empathetic relationship with Sanju’s character as he is skillfully portrayed as a victim of the circumstances. The fast paced screenplay and the plot keep the viewers hooked till the end of the movie and nobody will ask questions regarding the morality of the movie as long as they are being entertained by the flawless portrayal of Sanjay Dutt by Ranbir Kapoor who hits the correct notes right from the start of the movie to the last scene. He emulates the mannerisms of Dutt and captures his personality with a mesmerizing performance that leaves you spellbound with awe. Further, a lot of work has been put in by the makeup team in getting the look right and Sanjay Dutt has been perfectly recreated as the machoism of his personality has been adeptly displayed by Ranbir. All the scenes are highly captivating, especially for the young audience as they hold a lot of relevance in the present times and the makers impart a fresh feel to the script which is taken to the next level by performances of the supporting cast including Jim Sarbh, Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, and Paresh Rawal. But, Vicky Kaushal and Paresh Rawal leave an indelible impact on the audience by the level of authenticity in their performances and effortless portrayals. All-in-all Sanju is a highly entertaining, gripping, and yet crafty film which also proves the irony that the influential people and celebrities can have a wild lives as long as you can make an entertaining movie out of it. But, the core strength of Sanju lies in showcasing the human side of Sanjay Dutt for which he is loved, liked, and respected by the media and public alike. In the movie, he is presented as a flawed & rich spoilt brat, but a person who tries to be a good friend, a good son, and a good husband. The testimony to the fact that Sanjay Dutt is considered as a good human being are the scenes in which he is showcased as a follower of the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and in the scene in which he hosts a radio program in jail on the morals of Mahatma Gandhi. Watch it for the combined brilliance of Ranbir Kapoor & Rajkumar Hirani as they jointly create a colourful cinematic experience with emphasis on various shades of life in modern presented presented with a unique niche on celluloid. But, in the end the engaging story and strong script form the backbone of the film. A must watch!!!
