The film which looked like an attempt to bring back the glory of Sanjay Dutt would most certainly be remembered for the terrific performances of the cast.
Director by ace director Rajkumar Hirani, ‘Sanju’ is a biographical sketch of the life of actor Sanjay Dutt. The film follows his life as an actor, his addiction with drugs, arrest for his alleged association with 1993 Bombay bombings, his jail term, relationship with his father and his personal life in general. The film features Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Sanjay Dutt, Paresh Rawal as his father Sunil Dutt, Vicky Kaushal as his best friend, Diya Mirza as his wife Manyata among others.
What stood out the most in this biopic is the depiction of the bond that Sanjay Dutt shared with his mother and father. Manisha Koirala in his short role as Nargis, Sanjay Dutt’s mother creates an impact. But, it was Sanjay’s relationship with his father that will move you to tears. The scenes are well crafted emotionally and will definitely tug your heartstrings.
Ranbir Kapoor is simply astounding in this film and will leave you in awe of his performance. After a string of flop movies, this movie can definitely be marked as his comeback. Vicky Kaushal, despite being in the same frame as Ranbir doesn’t ever fade away. He creates a lasting impact with his role. Paresh Rawal with just right amount of emotions and strength, does complete justice to the character of a father trying to deal with circumstances. Diya Mirza, Anushka Sharma among others were quite apt and great in their roles too.
The writers have done a terrific job in bringing down the life with such complicated shades and dimensions. The background score was top- notch and the film has quite a few great songs.
All in all, Sanju was a terrific piece of Cinema as far as performances and filmmaking is considered. To judge its authenticity as a biopic, well, we’ll leave it for the viewers to judge and decide.
