Verdict - Screechy, incompetent film that never finds its footing.

Shorgul is an attempt to explore the reasons behind the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, but using the word "explore" would probably mean giving the film way more credit than it deserves. This is nothing but the same old tripe exposing the fact that politicians are corrupt and exploit the system for their selfish gains. Well, duh. This is a deafeningly loud film, one that never manages to decide the tone it wants to carry. The directors can't resist the temptation of cramming in item numbers and punchline-laden dialogue, which makes an uneasy combination with what the film is dealing with. The only saving grace is the performances, especially Ashutosh Rana, who plays the good guy here. Usually cast in villainous roles, Rana brings a humane touch to the film that's otherwise replete with the broadest of caricatures. Someone give him more good guy roles, please.
