    Verdict - It's sensitive too.

    SoormaRelease date : July 13, 2018

Sport biopics are a tried and successful 'formula'
.After athletics ( Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), wrestling ( Sultan,Dangal),cricket ( MSD- an untold story),now it's the turn of field hockey( Chak De India earlier, now Soorma, with Gold awaited).
The movie under review, though not as gripping as it ought to be,inspires in a moderate way.Sandeep Singh( Daljit Dosanj) took over ten years in training, two years in international arena, two years in rehab, two q a skipper ,whose main forte lied in ' drag fliks' ,to bring victory over the western neighbour when it seemed difficult.
The first half is rather sedate- a cut and paste show of proceedings, none being seriously handled. It's only in the second half( rehab and post rehab phase) they Shaad Ali( director) has some grip on the proceedings.Relatable, sensitive and engrossing.
Performance wise all have shone.Daljit himself in the lead role,Angad Bedi ( as Sandeep's elder brother),Taapsee Panu( as Sandeep's crush aka inspiration),Vijay Raaz( as Eric the foul mouthed coach),Kulbhushan Kharbanda( as a supportive federation official),Satish Kaushik( as the suffering dad) and others in the supporting roles.
The dance number ( Gentleman the laltern,Ganesh Acharya),music ( Shankar Ehsan Loy) and lyrics ( Gulzar),not great, but suited to the theme are a bonus.
The scenes where Sandeep wets the bed during paralysis and his frustration outpourings against his elder brother are well handled.
Where Soorma is lacking? The script fails to dramatise the theme. It's not known why all coaches are ruthless to the pupils? Surprising no nursing care is provided by the hospital where Sandeep remains hospitalised in a hopeless situation?
The step treatment meted to hockey compared to cricket, sports being a gateway to getting a government job ,the rehab centre at Holland we're apt.
All in all Soorma is an above average show.Could have been more effective if made in a regional language( Punjabi).
