Featuring stunning performances especially from Diljit Dosanjh and Alia Bhatt, Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab nevertheless felt to me like two films trying to fit into one. There's the mordant humour which Chaubey is so good at, going by the Ishqiya films, but there's also a very literal, very didactic arc that isn't very engaging at all times. Social evil, corrupt cops, political nexus; it all feels like a tastefully done Prakash Jha film, but a Prakash Jha film nonetheless. I like that despite all the scope, this is a delicately small-scale film - there's no grand political statement, it's a very simple love story which comes together beautifully at the end. But it also takes way too long to arrive at the point, and spends a lot of time pretending to be something it is not. For what it's worth, Abhishek Chaubey's weakest film for me.
