Rishi Kapoor is a well-known actor and Director in Bollywood, the home of Hindi Movies. He comes from the famous Kapoor Khandaan (family) in Mumbai. Born to the legend Raj Kapoor and Krishna Raj Kapoor on September 4th, 1952, Rishi Kapoor has two siblings Randheer Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor.
Rishi Kapoor made his debut as a child actor in the critically acclaimed movie Mera Naam Joker
in 1970. The movie directed by his Father Raj Kapoor had Raj and Simi Grewal as its lead cast. Rishi Kapoor played the younger version of Raj Kapoor's character. Though the film didn’t do as well at the box as it did with the critics, it won a slew of awards including a national award for Rishi Kapoor.
Rishi Kapoor made his debut as a lead actor in 1973, opposite Dimple Kapadia
in the movie Bobby, a teenage romance movie that defined the 70’s and remains a defining moment in both their careers. Legend has it, that Raj Kapoor had mortgaged most of his assets to fund Mera Naam Joker, which bombed. But Bobby set that equation right and Rishi Kapoor was clearly the lucky break his father needed. Rishi also closed the circle with Karz, the 1980 hit starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim (now Tina Ambani) and Simi Grewal, his father's heroine
in Mera Naam Joker.
Rishi met his wife, Neetu Singh, as a co-star in the 70’s. Rishi and Neetu did numerable films together including Kabhie Kabhie, Pati Patni Aur Woh, and Amar Akbar Anthony. Rafoo Chakkar, however, stands out as their only successful venture, which was not a multi starrer. Rishi and Neetu were married on 22nd January 1980. Their son Ranbir Kapoor
is one of India’s best-known actors.
Despite a big debut, the backing of his illustrious family and a reel to real romance, Rishi had a chequered career through the 70’s and he simply didn’t emerge as a hero who could deliver a film on just his shoulders. Not surprisingly, as the decade changed, Rishi’s roles went from co-star in multi starrer films to second lead and supporting roles.
The 90’s gave Rishi Kapoor a few hits to add to his record. His defining roles in multi starrers like Damini, Eena Meena Deeka, and Deewana brought him back to stardom. His roles in Chandni and Gurudev cemented his place among India’s evergreen romantic heroes. In 1999 he directed the movie Aa Ab Laut Chelein.
In 2010, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor (Singh) recreated some of their magic in the light-hearted movie Doh Doonie Chaar. In 2012, the evergreen Rishi Kapoor acted opposite his brother Randheer Kapoor in Houseful 2. A first time for them.
Despite his mixed success as a Bollywood hero, Rishi Kapoor is one of Indias more loved Romantic Heroes from Bollywood. He has a penchant for wit and controversy and revels in friendly banter over his sometimes provocative tweets. He lives in Mumbai, India.
