T20 World Cup 2024: Can Pakistan qualify for Super 8s after India's win over USA? Will Florida's weather be an issue? Here's what we know

Three wins from three games in Group A saw Team India book their spot in the Super 8 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. The Men in Blue began their campaign against Ireland, which they won by 8 wickets, followed by a win against arch-rivals Pakistan by 6 runs, and then a victory by 7 wickets against co-hosts United States. All three matches were played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Now with India already securing their spot, what will happen to Pakistan, who lost two games and won one? For the fans of the Men in Green, they would have breathed a sigh of relief after India beat the USA on Sunday, June 12. Victory for India meant Pakistan will continue to stay alive in the race to the Super 8s despite having won only one of their first three matches.

    Group A points table?

India, with three wins, is at the top of the Group A points table with 6 points. The USA, despite their defeat, is sitting in the second spot with 4 points from three matches (wins against Canada and Pakistan). However, their Net Run Rate (NRR) dropped below that of Pakistan after the loss. Pakistan hammered Canada, successfully chasing 107 in just 17.3 overs on Tuesday, June 12.

How can Pakistan qualify for the Super 8s?

Friday, June 14: United States vs Ireland in Florida - 8 PM IST (USA needs to lose)

Saturday, June 15: India vs Canada in Florida - 8 PM IST (India needs to win, and if they lose, it should be by a small margin)

Sunday, June 16: Pakistan vs Ireland in Florida - 8 PM IST (Pakistan has to win)

    Florida's weather:

While the math is simple for Pakistan to enter the Super 8, the weather poses a significant issue for them. They need the USA to lose their last game against Ireland, but if Friday's game is washed out, the co-host of the tournament will move to 5 points, ending Pakistan's chances of reaching the Super 8s.

The Men in Green are in danger of getting eliminated because of a washout, as rain has been hammering down in Lauderhill over the last few days, and the forecast for the USA vs. Ireland game does not look promising.

What's even worse is that even if the USA loses to Ireland, if Pakistan's game on Sunday is washed out, Babar Azam's men will be eliminated. The result of India's game against Canada doesn't matter for Pakistan.
