Poor boy, rich girl, small towns, messy pasts, a second chance and a lot of star gazing? Where have we heard this all before? Countless times I think, but it's pretty much the formula for every Nicholas Sparks movie adaptation and The Best of Me is no different.

Dawson (James Marsden) returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of friend. He'd left town many years ago to avoid getting caught up in the "family business" and save a near and dear. The side-effect of him leaving was that he never got to spend his life like he planned with his college sweetheart, Amanda. However at the funeral he bumps into Amanda (Michelle Monaghan) too, who's now married and moved on but sparks fly as soon as the two are near each other. Will the two end up together now or is it all just a passing moment?

The narrative jumps between the past and present leading up to the courtship and events that tear the two apart. The sub-plot involving Dawson's extended family whose way of life is crime and tries pulling in Dawson at every step seems rather rushed and pointlessly overcooked when things could have been handled better. But who am I to complain, it's a Nicholas Sparks movie right?

The tone is mellow, the flirting light-hearted and drenched with dollops of melodrama that alludes to longing and love. It's like watching yet another cinematic version of a glossy magazine with beautiful people come to life, you might be mildly interested but you can only watch them talk about mundane affection for so long. The movie's main lingering effect lies in the fact that it's able to stretch out an emotion without revealing the reasons for actions. It kills any chance of understanding the motivation of the characters for the longest period of time, since it wants to save all the action for the resolution, both past and present.

Fans of the romantic films will find this redundant and others just plain boring. Nicholas Sparks fans on the other hand have yet another petri-dish cultured exactly to their specifications. Have fun!
