I've always been a fan of Bardem's and after watching Babel, fell in love with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. I knew before going in for the film that I would walk out impressed, and I was, very impressed.

So here it is, you will either love it, or walk out confused, thinking you just wasted 2.5 hours of your life. Biutiful is a serious film, barely any laughs, may suck the soul out of you and hits on the harsh realities of life. Bardem's character is an interesting one. Trying to make right with the many wrongs in his own life, as well as those around him--before he loses his own life to cancer. He works in the Spanish Underworld, aware of the consequences of his actions (illegal Chinese immigrants living in unbearable conditions, etc etc) but still somehow gets portrayed as the 'good guy'. The viewers really begin to sympathize with his character, despite his flaws.

If serious movies are what you enjoy, I highly recommend this one. It has great acting, superb direction, and truly deserves the Oscars it has been nominated for.
