“Blended falls in the Adam Sandler brand of slapstick comedy but it's the chemistry with Drew Barrymore that offers respite for those not impressed by the boring plot.”

There is a character in Blended who always speaks Adam Sandler's fake last name wrong throughout the film. Apart from the fact that this is hilarious, when Sandler finally corrects him, he tells him he always knew what it was. He adds: "I know, I just like to have fun". When someone asks me about how good or bad Blended is or how almost any Adam Sandler movie is, for that matter, this is exactly how I react: I know what it is but I just like to have fun. Yes, this review won't be a critique but a justification.

I'm extremely bored of hearing how Adam Sandler movies are bad. I have always loved his films. I remember watching Happy Gilmore (1996), Billy Madison (1995) and The Wedding Singer (1998) and laughing out loud. I still watch them if they are playing on TV and still find them funny. In fact, I laugh when I think about certain scenes from it. There should really be no accounting for taste, especially when it comes to comedy. If there were, I would always be in debt. Indebted to fun?

Drew Barrymore teams up with Sandler for the third time after the much-loved 50 First Dates (2004) and The Wedding Singer. Drew Barrymore will always be as cute as a button for me, thanks to Mr. Spielberg. Her and Sandler have good chemistry, as they know how to bounce the humor off of each other. Sure, the humor is as slapstick and pedestrian as it can get but I'm pretty sure the screenwriters never thought of winning an Oscar.

The film is about two single parents - Jim and Lauren. Jim has three girls and Lauren has two boys. I'm sure you can guess the plot already. It's not so much about how good or bad the plot is, it's about how stupid the jokes are. Terry Crews showed up randomly out of nowhere and sings stuff like "Welcome welcome Africa!" or "Blending, blending! Movie ending". If you can't laugh at this, congratulations you know what kind of comedies you don't like. I laughed out every single time Terry Crews popped up in the background with his band of singers. I laughed every time Mfan, the hotel guy, pronounced Theodopolis wrong. I cared about how Lauren will become the mother the girls need and how Jim will become the dad the boys need. Alyvia Alyn Lind plays Jim's youngest daughter and is super adorable.

For no reason whatsoever, Dale Steyn shows up in the film. Well, the reason is they shot the film in South Africa and they can pay him to do a cameo. It's also probably the same reason why Shaquille O'Neal is there for 2 scenes and cries like a girl in one of them.

Apart from all the justifications I have given as to why this film is not worth critically evaluating, I'd like to add a few more. Any movie which has a bunch of Africans cracking Lord of the Rings jokes shall not be hated. Any movie where Drew Barrymore sings Somewhere Over the Rainbow shall not be hated.

Blended isn't a great film. Nor is it a comedic masterpiece. It is predictable and formulaic. For what it's worth, it is also consistently funny and does not bore you for a single second. If you like 50 First Dates, you will enjoy it. If you want to take a trip with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore to Africa, you will enjoy it. That's what the film really is, Good old Gilmore taking a vacation. There's no harm in you taking one either. A vacation from taking a film seriously that doesn't take itself seriously.
