“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 does not have the same innovation of the first film but it has some amazing visuals and laughs that would please the kids. One time watch.”

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is as good as its predecessor. The predecessor itself was nothing remarkable but perfectly enjoyable. It worked because of its unique concept, visual pomp, consistent jokes and of course… lots of food! This film works because of the same ingredients. The secret ingredient present in both films are the little details. The food puns are absolutely hilarious - shrimpanzees and tacodiles, for instance. There are some references made with idioms like "piece of cake" and a laugh out loud moment about a "leak in the boat".

Although, both films miss out one prominent, perhaps the most essential ingredient that could have made both films great - a good plot. Concepts are innovative but the plots are "cheesy" and not exactly fresh. That being said, if someone told me that there is a film about a land where cheeseburgers are evil and if they learn how to swim they will end up conquering the world, I would instantly buy a ticket. There is also a villain who does a better job of reminding you of Steve Jobs than the biopic that came earlier this year. He wants to launch Food Bar 8.0, in case you were wondering what a villain in this film would be doing.

The setting of the film is extremely fascinating. According to Bill Hader (who voices the main character Flint Lockwood), the first part was Armageddon and the second one is Jurassic Park. Except the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are replaced by food animals. Why anybody wouldn't want to watch that is beyond me. There are also two unabashedly cute things - a strawberry and marshmallow. Every time the strawberry (with a legit name, mind you - Barry the Berry) came on screen I wished I could leap into the screen and steal it and keep it forever with me. It is just so incredibly cute.

The film may not resonate the way other animated films this year have. On top of that list is Disney's Frozen and Pixar's Monsters University. I mentioned the plot is the film's main drawback. What I also mentioned but didn't clearly underline is that everything around it is delightful and charming, which is probably what you need in an animated film anyway. You want to sit back, watch a film that sucks you into its childish world, makes you laugh and feel good. Basically, Cloudy 2 offers fun and there is no accounting for that.
