Opening after an unsuccessful Oscar campaign, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close finally hits Indian cinemas. Hoping that the Oscar buzz might have a rub-off in influencing movie goers to part with their hard-earned cash, Reliance has been pushing the movie aggressively. However if you were to take my advice, youd be better off watching it on home video rather than on the big screen.

A young boy, Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) who may be afflicted by aspergers syndrome loses his father, Thomas (Tom Hanks) in the 9/11 attacks. Oskar whos been close to his father, doesnt know how to react emotionally to the loss and a year after the tragedy, he stumbles upon a small pouch amongst his fathers belongings that contains a key. Now much like how Oskar and Thomas used to play treasure hunt games before, Oskar takes it upon himself to find the lock which fits the key, so that he can keep a memory of his father alive. His search takes him across New York and he meets many people along the way who might or might not hold answers for him.

The movies languid pacing and overall tone of sadness make this a downer from the word go. There is little joy to be found and the attempts at humour dont always work. The emotional depth which it wants to convey feel forced since they border on being clichd. The one scene that does stand out is the last phone call between Thomas and his wife, Linda (Sandra Bullock) but thats thanks more to the acting than the writing. There are snatches of poignant interactions between Oskar and a man referred to as The Renter (Max von Sydow) who never speaks but conveys messages by writing them down on a piece of paper or simply by showing his palms which has yes and no tattooed on them respectively.

The pay-off for all the emotional investment in the movie seems flaccid by the weight of tragedy it tries to capture; not to say that there arent moments of poignancy but the overall thing seems to try too hard to make you weep.

Young Thomas Horn seems to have been burdened with a character that isnt exactly likeable thanks to his affliction but he does an adequate job. Tom Hanks is on auto-pilot mode in his few scenes while Sandra Bullock does exceedingly well in her few scenes. Max von Sydow is brilliant while John Goodman has a small and thankless role.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is a movie that has snippets of good acting and writing but the overall movie fails to convince you of its intentions being genuine and alas because of that seems clichd and Oscar-bait like product.
