The film is set very much in the near future, 2019 to be exact. Some nations have got together and set up a network of satellites to control the bad effects of the environment. The satellites named Dutch boy have technologies to prevent natural disasters from happening.
Due to some reason the satellite malfunctions causing natural disasters like earthquake and tsunami to take place and it is now a race against time to save the world from total destruction. The actors invoved are Scientist Gerard Butler, his younger brother Jim Sturgess ( on staff of POTUS), the POTUS himself ( Andy Garcia), Jim's fiance ( Assistant to POTUS) and Secretary of state ( Ed Harris).
Director Dean Devlin while working on a stereotyped and hackneyed plot grabs audience attention using CG to create awe inspiring visual effects which reminds us of the movie "2012". We have seen it all in 2012 and other similar films. There are many scenes of collapsing skyscrapers, explosions, people running helter-skelter, and generally an apocalyptic scenario. To balance these noisy scenes there is some emotional stuff in the brother to brother and father daughter relationship. In fact the film is narrated by Gerard"s 12 year old daughter who regards her father to be a hero, something which he proves later.
All actors put in spirited performances with no one standing out. In such films the major credit applause goes to the CG creator rather than actors who become subordinate to the visual effects.
