This one is about the grief and sadness of Casey Affleck who faces a series of misfortunes starting with his house burning down, the loss of his children, and the bitter separation from his wife. This makes him a recluse and a loner as he works as a handyman in a housing complex. He is quarrelsome and bad mannered all the time and has got himself involved in a number of fights.
After the death of elder brother Joe, Casey is shocked to learn from his brother's will that he is appointed as the guardian of his teenager nephew. This is a twist in his life for which he was not prepared and he finds it emotionally challenging to adjust to changed circumstances.
The nephew wants to stay in Manchester and Casey doesn't want to because of many painful memories. In a brilliantly done scene Casey's ex wife apologises for causing him mental anguish and says she still loves him inspite of being married. In the meantime Casey and the nephew have begun to understand each other and are emotionally connected with each other. Casey now moves to Boston where he has picked up a job. He has now promised to have an extra room for him whenever he visits.
A well directed and enacted movie but not everyone's cup of tea. It deals with the agony and anguish of a tormented soul.
