Some years back there was a movie called "Boyhood" which dealt with 12 years of the growth of a 7 year old white American boy till his late teens. The USP of the film was that the same actors were used over the years the film was being shot. This film is Boyhood of the black kind and it traces the growth of a young African American black boy well into manhood. He has a troubled and tormented childhood mainly because he has an abusive drug addicted mother who makes life hell for him.He suffers an identity crisis as he comes to terms with adverse circumstances' Additionally he is burdened with his gay sexual orientation which further alienates him. The film is by no means entertaining and will put off the average audience with its raw pessimistic treatment. The script provides opportunity for good acting by all characters and so the performances are of high calibre no doubt. Both Mahershala Ali and Naomi Harris excel in their roles bringing out the raw intensity required. In the ultimate analysis it is a festival film miles away from mainstream cinema. Is it overrated ? My answer is yes. Did it really deserve all the major film awards ? My answer is No ,I would go for La La Land anyday which is a proper mainstream film which the average audience can understand and appreciate.
