When one thinks of Sherlock Holmes, the words Mystery, Intelligence, brilliance immediately spring to mind. However, Mr. Holmes endeavours to show the iconic detective in a completely different light. The Sherlock Holmes in this movie is a shadow of his former self. The story is based on his journey to reclaim his mind, and some peace by solving a mystery that has eluded him for decades.

Sherlock Holmes is an old man of 93, who’s having a hard time dealing with dementia. Living in the English countryside with his housekeeper Mrs. Munro, and her son Milo, he spends his days beekeeping. However, a huge chunk of the movie takes place in flashbacks, showing Sherlock Holmes in his prime, and his attempt to solve a case that frightened him enough to quit being a detective. Also shown is Sherlock’s trip to Japan, which he embarked upon to search for a plant that would delay the onset of dementia. These two plots may seem completely unrelated at first, but they intertwine in a way only a Sherlock Holmes movie would be able to pull off.

Sherlock Holmes is probably the most adapted character on television. There have been many representations throughout the decades, and Mr. Holmes is very good addition to that roster. Ian Mckellen plays the role of both Mr holmes and Sherlock perfectly. There’s also a wonderful bit of casting that acts as a nod towards previous Holmes adaptations. Mr. Holmes is a must watch for all fans of Sherlock Holmes. It won’t be what you expect, but you definitely won't be disappointed.
