A small time thief struggling to make ends meet and resorting to violence if need be (a sociopath of sorts) stumbles by accident ( pun intended) to the profession of night crawling which is to reach the site of an accident or fire or a crime with a video camera, shoot the scene ( injuries/damage/blood) and sell the footage to a TV channel. Needless to add, the bloodier and the murkier, the better.

All this has to be done professionally and as soon as possible to beat his competitor to the TV studio which specialises in the telecast of sensational news.Seconds matter in this high speed game and whoever comes first gets the prize.A free lancing job with a difference and a new kind of crime reporting. Voyeurism at it's creepy best.

Armed with a police scanner,a video camera and a huge amount of determination and confidence our new nightcrawler ,Louis Bloom ( Jake Gyllenhaal) gets on the job and is able to learn the tricks of the trade fast. He then hires an assistant, Rick ( Riz Ahmed) to sit alongside and navigate him to the site of the accident since time is at a premium. How together they have frequent brushes with the law and have internal conflicts at work forms the rest of the story leading to a thrilling climax.

Director Dan Gilroy has a tight shooting script and some inspiring dialogue to bring to life the nocturnal adventures of the nightcrawler. He is helped by some superb night effect photography and skillful editing giving the movie a brisk pace. Most of the action takes place at night on the streets of LA ,and the car chase sequences are set to a pulsating background score. The action is the edge of the seat type and gets the adrenaline going  Definitely some very good work by the director and his technicians with not a dull moment.

Carrying the film with great finesse is Jake Gyllenhaal who plays the title role to perfection with a dialogue delivery worth watching. Some of his lines are quite long but he manages to create a devastating effect with his smirk. As the clever, sinister, cold, ruthless and relentless go getter who will not stop at anything to achieve his objective, he gives a whole new meaning to the word anti hero. An award winning performance indeed

.Matching him with an equally splendid performance is Rene Russo who plays Nina, the boss of the TV studio. It is a treat to see her getting totally awestruck by the convincing arguments of Jake in his negotiations. Riz Ahmed as his assistant also acts well as the naive and confused Rick.

A taut script, some forceful dialogue, excellent acting, skillful direction.and top class photography/ editing make this film in the" must see" category.

If some talented young director decides to make a Hindi movie on this script, I recommend Emraan Hashmi and Richa Chadda for the main roles.
