Oscar Winner Sandra Bullock wooed us last time in her role in Gravity. It takes real talent to pull off a role where you occupy the screen for such a long time and don't do much besides emote. Here, she is more dynamic, has more to do and is in the middle of a political campaign. Calamity Jane has been pulled from the mountain valleys where she was chilling making pottery to manage a presidential campaign in Bolivia. She is pitted against another campaign manager, the conniving Candy, played by Billy Bob Thornton. Although parallels have been drawn with many other movies and a documentary on the same theme, one of my favorites on this was Ides of March, where Ryan Gosling does a fabulous job, as the suave, cold, calculating manager whose ideologies shift. Here, it is more cornball, more cliched, as if something incredible happened to change the heart of a campaign manager who suddenly starts worrying about things those in the marketing sector rarely worry. The presidential prospect has his own secrets and angles and geopolitics really doesn't seem to be one of the strengths of the movie. In the end, it gives the audience neither a hilarious black comedy that is laced with sharp wit, nor does it give us a political thriller and the behind the scenes story of how a high profile presidential campaign was managed. It leaves you distracted with its own distractions!
