The film is about romance and adventure on a space ship carrying 5000 passengers and 528 crew to a colony planet Homestead 2. It is a 120 years voyage to destination but due to some technical problem one the hibernation pods opens up prematurely after 30 years. The occupant is Chris Pratt who is now the only person awake on the spaceship and spends his time moving about . To give him company is bartender Arthur who is an android but who can make polite programmed conversation.
Chris very soon looks for company by going through personal data of the sleeping passengers. After an year in space ,he is attracted to Jennifer Lawrence and he then manipulates the equipment to wake her up. They then together roam around the ship to look for other humans and soon enough fall in love.
Some time later they find another human, the deck officer Laurence Fishburne who is equally dumbfounded to realise that 3 hibernation pods have malfunctioned whereas they were supposed to be foolproof.
But all is not well and things go topsy turvy. The deck officer dies due to multiple organ failure, the spaceship starts disintegrating and both Chris and Jennifer go though life threatening situations in the climax before the much awaited happy ending.
Director Morten Tyldum has made an entertaining film which will be enjoyable for the popcorn eating average audience. The film has some exciting moments and the cinematography is splendid. It reminds us of "Gravity " in some scenes. Very unusual to have romance and love making scenes in a a sci fi flick but that is what probably makes it different.
