Tobe Hooper's (or Steven Spielberg's, depending on who's telling the story) 1982 horror classic was a madly inventive horror film which drew its power from the unseen, psychological fears instead of ghouls jump-scaring you every other minute. This 2015 remake, directed by Gil Kenan, attempts to be a stand-alone work free of the trappings of the original but sadly, doesn't offer anything of substance of its own. Gone is the primal nature and the urgency of the original, this one features more in-your-face ghosts and loud boo-moments perfunctorily showing up every minute; but little work goes into any sort of character or idea development for the horror to truly creep on you. The update, although not terrible, relies more on surface-level shocks than the instinct-based, psychology-driven fear. And when the movie doesn't care to draw you in but instead is happy jumping out at you every now and then, it's hard not to lose interest after a while.
