I love films set against a wintery backdrop in a snowy region. Something like 30 days of night so when I saw the trailer of this film I expected a visual treat but then that is the least you can expect from a production designer turned director.

The film is about a small village living under the scare of a werewolf attacks. A priest (Gary Oldman) arrives to tell them that the werewolf is someone from the village itself. What follows is a hunt to find out who is the werewolf. A good enough plot for an engaging suspense film but by adding a love triangle between Valerie (Amanda Seyfried), Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) & Henry (Max Irons) which is a clear Twilight influence messes up the entire film and before you realize the film loses steam. Writer David Johnson tries to blend two different plots into one film which slows down the pace of the film and the intrigue dies down by the time you reach the end of solving the mystery of the werewolf. David who has written Orphan should have written it like a horror mystery film than going the Twilight route but here it looks like the director Catherine clearly wanted to walk that road again. An unimpressive cast where not a single actor stands out doesnt help much either. What is left to admire then is Thomas E. Sanders (Apocalypto, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart) stunning production design & Mandy Walkers (Australia) striking cinematography. Strangely, one of the producers is Leonardo DiCaprio. Wonder what attracted him to this script.

Final few words: visually stunning but low on thrills, chills and storytelling. If not for the love triangle this could have been a good suspense thriller to be watched on a rainy/cold night. I suggest go read the red riding hood again.
