Hollywood seems to be exploring a new formula these days. Bring all the oldies together and make an action film around them. Stallone did it with The Expendables and failed big time but long time back in Bollywood Raj Kumar Santoshi tried to do something like that when he made China Gate.

Red has no resemblance or connection to Vikram Bhatts Red. Any similarity with the title should be taken with a pinch of lal namak. the film is about an ex black op guy ( Bruce Willis) going back to doing what he does best and along the way assembling his old team to get back at the bad guys. Nothing fresh or interesting there as a plot but what works for the film are two names. John Malkovich & Helen Mirren. Malkovich gets the best character in the film with some smart ass lines & it is a treat to watch Helen Mirren kick some butt. Just for these two the movie is worth every penny & time you spend in the theatre. The screenplay is goofy and plays to the gallery. There are enough action pieces to entertain you. Some clearly belong in a Rajni movie. Dir Schwentke who earlier gave us a taut thriller in Flightplan goes all out with this one. In a complete turn around from his earlier films he seems to be having a lot of fun with this one. Go watch the trailer of his debut film Tatoo and you will know what I am talking about. What doesnt work for the film is that after the initial rush of euphoria the film gets a bit of a drag.

Final few words: if you want a mad action comedy go for this one without expecting anything. One things for sure it wont leave you red in the face.

Rating: **

Ticket Meter: I saw it at Mami but easily worth 200/- bucks.
