8 years ago, Halle Berry as Jinx was touted to be the first female spy in a spinoff series from 007. However, that was not to be. Cut to 2010: it seems she was making way for Mrs Pitt - after all, who else ? From 'Taking Lives' to 'Mr & Mrs Smith', from 'Lara Croft' to 'Wanted', she has always maimed and killed hapless men with panache. And this is yet another addition to her already impressive roster.
The movie is set in a span of around 50 hours across 3 days. Evelyn Salt (Jolie) is a CIA operative who is asked to interrogate a 'walker' - a defecting russian spy. This man, Orlov, tells her about a planted KGB agent, who will kill the Russian Prime Minister currently visiting the States to attend the funeral of the erstwhile US Vice President. When he reveals that the agent is Salt herself, she flees from the office, with her former friends now in hot pursuit.
Whether she is a planted agent or not does not matter, because by the time the film climaxes, our femme fatale has done her director proud - by falling off a bridge and landing on a trawler, and further jumping on to a tanker (she does so with so much ease that you might be tempted to try it yourself), she , at times, puts Mr Bond to shame. And she does all this without the fancy gadgetry and smashing cars that he is equipped with - Salt relies on her weapons and great looks to captivate the audience and decimate the opposition.
Well, putting together girls-n-guns will ensure you the attention of half the population on the planet. But Salt has enough to offer to the ladies too, as her character is unlike other caricaturish female action heroines (say, Charlie's Angels). She actually believes in getting her hands dirty- swollen eyes and a profusely bleeding Jolie authenticate the look of a battered-but-not-beaten spy. This helps the movie which does not rely on Angelina's sex appeal (which, however will always be incentive enough to watch her on the big screen :-) ) but on the story and execution instead.
It does appear to be outlandish at times, as Salt jumps down lifts effortlessly, and manages to dupe tens of CIA & Secret Service officers. But such indiscretions are allowed to the director, as long as the adrenaline rush keeps overflowing.
Angelina Jolie is definitely worth her 'salt'. Deserves a dekko !
