Oh how lovely would this film have been if it was Maggie Smith's Muriel who would have been at the helm of the script. The film would have worked wonders for me if we had Muriel's acerbic wit and impatience with suffering fools when it comes to half of the final product. What we have instead is a terribly Orientalist look to a premise that might have just about worked the first time around.

And what is it with Dev Patel's Peter Seller meets Genie vocabulary et accent? With everyone else in the Pink City and his family, friends speaking for their generation, Sonny boy is grating on the nerves.

So Sonny goes a marrying-ho and he is planning on expanding his empire too; but there is a Comedy of Errors with a hotel inspector and things are more Fawlty Towers than ever. In the meantime Bill Nighy's Douglas and Judie Dench's Evelyn are playing at Two Steps Forward One Step Back and Celia Imrie's Madge Hardcastle is going Eeny Meeny Mina Moe amongst her admirers. Add to it an insecure groom to be, a Kevin Rawleyesque friend to the bride to be, a femme fatale of a mother to the groom, a couple straining at monogamy in the middle years, an auto driver who may have just agreed to turn hit man and what a pickle we have got ourselves into.

I am sorry, but the film is more second rate Wah Taj Britannica than anything else.

I am checking out.
