Any movie that stars a child or a horse is bound to give you goose bumps and Secretariat is no different. Add to this the excitement and tension of horse racing and you have a winner on your hands even as the starting gun sounds.

Based on the story of a horse called Secretariat who in 1973, won the Triple Crown, a record that has not been broken since. Not only did Secretariat set the record for the fastest time at the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), each of his quarter-mile splits were faster than the preceding one, which means he was still accelerating at the end of the race. You have to watch the horse looking like a ballerina as his runs to know the definition of grace and form.

The story is as much about Secretariats talent (does that sound correct? Or should I say prowess?)as the story of his owner, Penny Chenery who in her struggle to retain her fathers farm trains the horse into a prize winning one. The story through her touches on womens liberation and the struggle of a woman in that era to combine work and family life, that too in a male dominated field like horse racing. The movie also touches on the hippie era and the peace movement of the 60s.

The movie is interesting for all these aspects as much as for the story of the horse. I loved seeing the clothes Penny Tweeny wears-classic 60s twin sets and her hair done up in a blonde wavy Jackie Onassis style. Diane Lane as Penny looks a picture of elegance and strength. The supporting characters of the horse trainer, the loyal secretary and the horses minder are also well etched out, I guess a task made easy because they are taken from their real life personas.

Watch out for a pleasant surprise in the end which will increase the height of the goose bumps a wee bit :)

You will enjoy this movie. If you know any kids take them with you. A different kind of pleasure from Golmaal 3 awaits them at this one.
