Some films are so boring that they suck out your energy. The lone ranger is one such film. I think Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp should take a break from each other.
A kid walks into a wild wild west exhibition to find a Comanche spirit warrior in the form of an old Tonto ( Johnny Depp) who starts telling him the story of him and the lone ranger/John Reid ( Armie Hammer). Tonto and John meet during a train hijack by Butch Cavendish’s ( William Fichtner) men to rescue him. The search for Butch makes both of them travel together on a wild wild west adventure.
The film stretches the story to an extreme filled with long passage of people yapping. The screenplay is as barren as the location it is shot in. If you are looking for action it has only two good set pieces. One is in the beginning and one in the end.
Johnny Depp yet again looks like a variation of his Jack Sparrow character. His character Tonto’s meaning in Spanish is silly or stupid and that’s what his performance is in the film. Armie Hammer gets his first breakout lead role and makes the most out of it.
With three writers on board Justine Haythe (Revolutionary Road) Ted Elliot & Terry Rossio (Pirates series/Shrek) the screenplay is lethargic to the core. Tonto has a good back story but it comes in so late that it doesn’t help the character the way it should have.
Word of mouth – the lone ranger is so lethargic and boring that it will suck out the energy out of you.
