The plot is about an angry middle aged mother aggressively confronting the law when the criminals who raped and killed her teenaged daughter are not arrested even after considerable period of time. In one of her desperate moods she ( Frances McDormand) gets 3 billboards made and has them fixed outside her town Ebbing. The first board reads" Raped while dying", the second one says "Still no arrests" and the third one says" How come Police Chief ?". As one enters the town, one can read these boards strategically placed in sequence The local Police Chief Woody Harrelson and his deputy Sam Rockwell are both angry and embarrassed by the turn of events. While Harrelson is a dying man and has little time left due to cancer his deputy is a cruel and sadistic person who will go to any length to take vengeance. Harrelson explains to the angry mother that they tried their best to track the hooligans but in the absence of any positive lead they could not pursue the case further.
Interesting events unfold in quick succession which cannot be discussed here for the obvious reasons. Needless to say the entire movie makes for engrossing fare.
A thriller of sorts which will keep you riveted, this film comes with superb performances. No wonder that the Oscar for best actress and best supporting actor were given to Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell respectively who have both performed extremely well.Just about everything in this movie is first rate including direction by Martin McDonagh, the realistic cinematography and the taut screenplay.
