The film chronicles the life of military pilot and Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini in broadly 3 phases
1. The initial years when he trains as an athlete and takes part in the Berlin Olympics of 1936. He gets full support of his parents and brother.
2. His aircraft being shot down on one of his military missions and his plane crashlands into the sea. Louis along with his two comrades spends 47 days braving the merciless sea on a raft. They manage to survive by eating raw fish. They are also fired upon by Japanese military planes. One of them dies due to malnutrition and fatigue and is given a burial in the sea.
3. While on the raft at sea for 47 days, Louis and his partner are picked up by Japanese and taken to a POW camp where they along with other allied troops are subjected to extreme methods of torture. They are released when the WW2 comes to an end.
It is a tale showing the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adverse circumstances, as the soldiers undergo physical and mental torture by the Japanese. Inspite of extreme suffering Louis does not break. Hence the title "Unbreakable ".
Direction by actress Angelina Jolie is praiseworthy for the authenticity and impact of the scenes. There are some awe inspiring scenes on the rough seas and the POW camp. She has nicely brought out the bravery, resilience and endurance of the protagonist who is fighting for survival.
In the leading role, Jack O' Connel as the much troubled and tormented soldier turns in a superb performance. He has brought out the pain and suffering very realistically.
The cinematography and other technical qualities are top class with some good special effects.
