plot

The animals at the Franklin Park Zoo love their kindhearted caretaker, Griffin Keyes. Finding himself more comfortable with a lion than a lady, Griffin decides the only way to get a girl in his life is to leave the zoo and find a more glamorous job. The animals, in a panic, decide to break their time-honored code of silence ...more

Verdict

“A few laughs and some cute talking animals are all that Zookeeper has to offer. While the juvenile story attracts kids, jokes make it an inappropriate watch for them.”

I can't quite decide where to slot this movie. On the one hand it has animals that talk so that makes it a movie for kids. On the other hand, the animals are dishing out advice on how to woo and win a girl, a lesson which will be totally lost on the 3-10year set who may find bashing up th opposite sex a more pleasant pastime.

The story is about a zookeeper who in an attempt to win back his super glamorous girlfriend decides to chick his much loved job as a zookeeper and work as a car salesman. The animals panic on learning that he may leave them and decide to advise him on how to impress the girl, albeit in ways that work in the animal kingdom. Of course, it all works out in the end.

There are a couple of great dialogues in the movie that make you laugh, but also a couple of really stupid slapstick scenes. Also, once the novelty of watching animals talk wears off, the movie starts to drag. The track about the zookeeper's friendship with the gorilla is qite sweet and more interesting than the romance which makes you impatient.

Adam Sandler is one the producers of this movie and I feel it he may have added more charm to the movie if he had played the lead too. Kevin James from the sitcom The King of Queens that used to air on TV a while back is not that cute and you wonder why the glamourous girl would fall for him in the first place.

The movie works in parts but you may find ourself getting a bit edgy. It's short which is great because there is only so much you can do with talking animals. Overall, if you have an hour and a half to kill it's a pleasant watch, a bit ticklish like a fish foot massage but you can't tale too much of it. Kids may like the part about the animals talking even though the younger ones may not understand what they are talking about. Strictly ok.
