Verdict - Watchable thriller that becomes too predictable.

You can rely on Guillermo del Toro to create beautiful-looking movies, with magnificent sets complemented by lovely production design. Recreating the old world English charm through Allendale Park, a dilapidated, sinking, ghastly house where Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddlestone) lived with his sister (Jessica Chastain) for example, the makers give us an abandoned haunting setting that traps the audience like it did the heroine Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska), a wannabe writer who is charmed and seduced enough by Mr. Sharpe to fall head over heels for him. However, the tale takes twists as the sinister looking Sharpe has more secrets locked away in his derelict mansion shared with his sister who always seemed to nurse a hatred for his bride. As the movie unravels, you can predict much of the plot built around a gothic story. The only problem is that Edith is too dumb and too naive to even create a connection with the audience. So you never root for her at any stage. The thrill and tension around the greed of the Sharpes and their terrible secrets fizzles away in the end when Guillermo trades the love trumps over evil line towards the end through his grey-shades character Mr. Sharpe. The movie recreates another era of charm beautifully and has thrills and frills with interestingly conjured ghosts that do a good job of confusing you, as you wonder if they are just her delusions and not the conventional ghosts in horror movies. All in all, Crimson Park is not as much about love as it is about a Gothic obsession gone wrong. You can sit through it, but you won't be thoroughly enthralled.
